Mourning
The color that was used to indicate that someone was in mourning was much like today, black. Depending on the wealth and class of the family, the mourners may be provided with black gowns, hoods, pins, ribbons, gloves and stockings. However, no black armbands would have been worn. The mourners that were provided with these articles of clothing were invited to mourn for the dead person. The mourners would also wear sprigs of rosemary in their hat or pinned onto their sleeves, to indicate to others that they were in mourning. During the funeral procession some people even blackened the soles of their shoes (Secara).
